Colts rookie Riley Leonard makes his feelings clear on Philip Rivers taking over QB1 role

The Indianapolis Colts signed Philip Rivers, who last played in the NFL in the 2020 season, to their practice squad on Wednesday. While the Colts are yet to promote 44-year-old Rivers to their active squad, Indy’s rookie quarterback Riley Leonard has opened up on having a veteran who might start ahead of him this season.

On Wednesday, Leonard was asked whether he felt frustrated by the Colts’ decision to sign Rivers since it would add more competition to the QB1 role. The rookie offered a different perspective.

“I’m only a rookie,” Leonard said. “But I’ve learned in this business — don’t have an opinion on it. Just excited to be my best. … He’s obviously a good friend, a mentor of mine.”

The Colts signed Rivers due to injury woes around their quarterbacks. Indy lost QB1 Daniel Jones after his season-ending Achilles injury in Week 14.

On Wednesday, Rivers said that he wasn’t planning to return to the NFL, but is now eager to get back to the grind with the Colts.

“I wasn’t hanging onto any hope of playing again. I kind of thought that ship had sailed,” Rivers said. “But something about it excited me. It’s one of those deals where a door opens and you either walk through it and find out if you can do it, or run from it. I know there’s risk involved, but the only way to find out is going for it.”

Leonard has been dealing with a knee injury, while Anthony Richardson is still on the injured reserve list.

The Colts (8-5) will face the Seattle Seahawks (10-3) in Week 15 of the 2025 NFL season on Sunday. The game will kick off at 4:25 p.m. ET from Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.

It’s unclear whether Philip Rivers will lead Indy’s offense against Seattle.

Rivers played one season with the Colts in 2020. He led Indy to the playoffs that season, but his team lost to the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card round.

It will be interesting to see if Rivers can lead the Colts back to playoffs this season.
