“It’s a fireable offense”: Cam Newton calls out Kevin Stefanski over pulling Shedeur Sanders on Browns’ crucial 2-point attempt vs. Titans

This post was originally published on this site.

Kevin Stefanski is facing a full-blown Cleveland meltdown after benching Shedeur Sanders for the Browns’ game-tying two-point attempt in Sunday’s 31-29 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Sanders watched from the sideline as the Browns ran a wildcat play through running back Kevin Stefanski that immediately blew up, thus sealing another painful defeat. Stefanski accepted blame for the decision in his post-game presser, but Cam Newton wasn’t having it.

The former MVP unloaded on ‘First Take,’ calling the move “extremely embarrassing” and flat-out “a fireable offense.”

“This is the only team in the NFL that takes their starting quarterback out in the biggest moment,” Newton said. “You’re running a gadget play with a non-natural thrower while your QB, who’s balling, is standing on the sideline. What are we doing? Are we actually trying to win?”

Sanders delivered a monster performance. 23 of 42 passing, 364 yards, three touchdowns, one pick, plus a rushing touchdown vs. Titans.

Shedeur Sanders addresses being taken off-field for crucial play

Sanders gave the Cleveland Browns every reason today to believe he’s their future. But despite his outstanding performance, the moment everyone is talking about is the one where he wasn’t on the field. However, Sanders stayed diplomatic afterward.

“If I’m out there any play, I wish I would always have the ball in my hand,” Sanders admitted. “But that’s not what football is… We practiced it, and it just didn’t pan out today.”

Sanders refused to second-guess the call. He backed Stefanski’s decision, saying that no coach intentionally dials up a play expecting failure. Stefanski offered little explanation postgame, only saying the play did not go as we thought it would and insisting he, not OC Tommy Reese, deserved the blame.
