The try was the pick of the bunch in Ysgol Glantaf’s WSC final victory over Coleg y Cymoedd at the Principality Stadium
Ysgol Glantaf were crowned Wales Schools and Colleges champions on Wednesday thanks to a thrilling 28-26 win over Coleg y Cymoedd, with one of their tries setting the Principality Stadium alight.
The win capped off an unbeaten WSC campaign for Glantaf, during which they averaged six tries a game. Llywarch ap Myrddin’s side brought that same attacking flair to the final, with some dazzling rugby on display.
Will Adams’ opening try was a fine flowing effort from deep, but it was then eclipsed by their remarkable third score.
Already leading 14-0 in the first-half, turnover ball presented Glantaf with the chance to move it wide.
Quick hands from loosehead Gruff Laugharne and fly-half Evan Jones got the ball to outside centre Bailey Cutts.
Cutts did brilliantly to draw in Cymoedd wing Jack Piontecki before flicking an offload out to wing Joe Fernandez.
Fernandez found centre Adams in support, who kept the move going with a second catflap offload back to wing Fernandez.
After handing off Cymoedd full-back Rhys Wyatt, the wing went over in the corner for a superb score – his ninth of the season.
S4C commentator Gruff McKee was left stunned by the score, simply repeating “Wow” a few times, before adding that Glyntaf had brought the “razzamataz”.
On S4C’s English-language commentary, former Ospreys coach Sean Holley added: “They’re so dangerous with ball in hand and on turnover they come alive.
“Glantaf are on fire. The little catflap passes, it was created by the centres.”
Siwan Lillicrap, the former Wales captain, said: “Outstanding work by this Glantaf side. Just enjoyable rugby to watch.
“Look at this intent from them to move the ball to the wide channels. Their passing skills are brilliant, but what’s impressive is their offloading skills.
“Something they’ve obviously been working on skillset-wise, but the execution is brilliant. It’s exciting rugby to watch.”
