A division one west clash was abandoned after a player suffered a serious injury

A Welsh rugby match was abandoned after 31 minutes due to a player suffering a gruesome lower limb injury which required emergency surgery.

During last Saturday’s division one west clash at Hendy RFC, Kidwelly RFC scrum-half Cameron Jones dislocated his ankle and fractured his fibula.

As a result the match was abandoned and an ambulance was called.

“Cameron made a linebreak but was tackled from behind and as a result he dislocated his ankle and fractured his fibula,” Kidwelly RFC head coach Jonathan Griffiths told WalesOnline.

“The referee immediately blew the whistle and the physios from both clubs rushed onto the field to help Cameron.

“Our physio Jordan Davies along with two from Hendy, Heledd Clarke and Cerys Thomas, did a fantastic job in helping Cameron who was screaming in agony.

“The bone was sticking out and the ankle was the other way round.

“He had his sock on so that was covering it but his foot was dangling, so it was a really nasty injury.

“The ambulance arrived in just over an hour and straightened his leg before he was taken to hospital.

“I have to say a huge thank you to everyone at Hendy RFC for the way they handled the situation and looked after Cameron.

“He was kept warm while Hendy gave tea and coffees to everyone who were still on the pitch.”

Jones was then taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea where he underwent surgery on his foot.

The 21-year-old personal trainer is a popular member of the Kidwelly team but will be out of action for a lengthy period due to the extent of his injury.

“Cameron had surgery on Sunday where he had six screws and a plate put in,” Griffiths added.

“He came home yesterday and is still in a lot of pain but he is on the road to recovery.”
