Rugby great posts apology video after podcast appearance

The former Ulster winger described his error as ‘brainless’

Former Irish rugby hero Andrew Trimble has apologised for making a high-profile error while analysing the recent Champions Cup clash between Munster and Gloucester on Saturday.

Munster won the game 31-3 and, while dissecting the clash for the Second Captains podcast, the former Ulster winger appeared to get himself momentarily confused.

Instead of playing at their usual Thomond Park home, the match took place at Pairc Ui Chaaoimh, the home of Cork GAA.

The former Ulster winger, who played 70 times for Ireland during his playing career, made the mistake of referring to the stadium as Croke Park.

Trimble later took to Instagram to issue a humorous apology, holding his hands up for the error.

“Hey folks, I just want to get ahead of it. Today I made a faux pas on a rugby podcast with Shane Horgan on Second Captains,” Trimble said in an Instagram video.

“We were responding to the European rugby that had been on at the weekend. We were talking specifically about the Munster vs Gloucester game.

“I went to make a point about this game and I went to reference the venue that the game was played in. It was played in Cork’s Pairc Ui Chaoimh – obviously a very famous and well-known GAA ground.

“I was absent-minded or brainless, I’m not sure.

“But I embarrassingly called it Croke Park! And I know by the reaction of the other guys who were like (straight away) ‘Pairc Ui Chaoimh’.

“And I know by their reaction they were like ‘This protestant thinks he can just say any old Gaelic football ground and get away with it, like it’s close enough’. And I’m not THAT bad. I’m not here telling you I’m a connoisseur of Irish Gaelic football grounds but I know it’s Pairc Ui Chaoimh!”

But it wasn’t the only error Trimble made during this ill-fated podcast appearance, as he went on to mention a ‘damp squid’ rather than a ‘damp squib’ when describing the game.

In his apology video, he added: “I was a little bit rattled from that moment and I went on to talk about the event as a whole.. as a damp, I know you’re urging me to say squib, but I said squid. And this is not a protestant thing!

“I know a squib should be dry. I know a squid if anything should be wet. It was out of me, I was just rattled from the previous mistake and before I knew it I had really let myself down on two fronts.”
