Former NFL tackle Taylor Lewan has suggested Matt Campbell to Michigan as a head coach candidate following the Wolverines’ firing of Sherrone Moore. The Michigan alum and former Tennessee Titans star made the suggestion on Thursday’s episode of “Get Up.”
Campbell is not the only name suggested by Lewan. However, his name stood out for the simple reason that he just signed a contract to become the new head coach of Penn State football.
Thanks for the submission!
Lewan doesn’t think this matters, however. To him, it is a question of how dry the ink is on Campbell’s contract with the Nittany Lions. He said:

“Then Matt Campbell is probably the last name on my list. They’re probably not in any specific order. But I would look to Matt Campbell. And the way I hear Josh Pate, who is the commissioner of college football, Matt is a guy I would look at how dry the ink is on that contract. Look at Penn State and how they went about their coaching search. They hit about seven, eight, nine, ten people before they got Matt Campbell. If I’m Matt and I feel some type of way about Penn State and their process, and if I’m one of Michigan’s top three calls, I’m listening to that call.”
Other names on Lewan’s list of potential Michigan coaches are Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer, Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham, and the LA Chargers’ defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. While trying to secure the services of a new head coach, the Wolverines have named associate head coach Biff Poggi as interim head coach.
How is Michigan moving on from Sherrone Moore?
Poggi oversaw Michigan’s Week 3 and Week 4 games while Sherrone Moore was on a two-game suspension. The Wolverines won both games, the kind of result they will be hoping to replicate in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve. Poggi will lead the team to face the Texas Longhorns in the game.
Like Lewan pointed out, hiring a new coach is a challenge the Wolverines must quickly surmount. Having an opening so late in the coaching carousel cycle means Michigan’s options will be greatly limited after so many coaching shifts and contract renewals.
Sherrone Moore was shown the door with three more years still on his contract. However, having fired him with cause, the Wolverines will not be liable for his $12.3 million buyout.
