Martin Gillingham and former Wales international Alex Cuthbert were surprised by the decision
TV commentators were left baffled by a refereeing call during the Ospreys defeat to Munster on Saturday as one player’s smile told the entire story.
Jack Crowley’s conversion in the 37th minute appeared to drift to the right of the posts, but the assistant referees’ flags still went up to indicate the kick was good. Looking over to the sidelines afterwards, Crowley himself could seemingly scarcely believe it judging by his knowing smile.
In the grand scheme of things, the extra two points mattered little – with Munster running out 26-10 winners at the Brewery Field.
However, the call didn’t go down too well on social media or in the commentators’ box.
“Still losing it a little bit to the right… well the flags are raised,” said Premier Sports commentator Martin Gillingham.
“Certainly a few people where I am were not convinced that went through the sticks, but depth perception is a difficult thing to judge.”
Former Wales wing Alex Cuthbert wasn’t convinced either, saying: “I’m not sure.
“Those guys are underneath the posts. I’m sure they get it right!”
Gillingham then referred to Snicko, the controversial decision-making technology system being used in Australia cricket that has come under fire for some dodgy decisions in the third Ashes Test.
“Maybe they’ve got Snicko on the job today,” added Gillingham, before Cuthbert urged him not to bring that up.
“Well if they can get it wrong in Adelaide in the Ashes series, we can maybe excuse the odd blemish here in Bridgend,” added Gillingham.
The reaction on social media was equally surprised by the call.
One Munster fan noted that “even Jack couldn’t believe the call from the linesmen on this conversion”.
While an Ospreys supporter simply posted: “Get me out of this league.”
