Manchester United are ready to pursue a deal for Al-Hilal midfielder Ruben Neves during the January transfer window, according to Teamtalk.

The Portugal international was a top target for the Red Devils during his time at Wolverhampton Wanderers, but he ended up joining Al-Hilal instead.

Neves has his sights on returning to Premier League football this winter and United have now emerged as the front-runners to land his services.

Talks are underway with the Saudi Pro League club for the Portuguese, who seems prepared to accept a significant salary cut to make the switch.

United have been heavily dependent on Casemiro for the number six role this campaign with manager Ruben Amorim reluctant to play Kobbie Mainoo or Manuel Ugarte in the department.

Mainoo has been linked with a loan move away from the club in January while they are suggestions that Ugarte could be sold permanently next summer.

Neves could be signed for £18 million or even less with his contract expiring next summer. Al-Hilal want to recoup some of their £47m investment.
