The 26-year-old picked up a knee injury for Gloucester last weekend
Wales centre Max Llewellyn is a major doubt for the Six Nations after Gloucester confirmed he would be sidelined until the latter part of the season.
The 26-year-old was forced off after just 16 minutes of the Cherry and Whites’ 34-14 win over Castres last weekend with a knee injury. Ahead of Llewellyn getting a scan on his knee, Gloucester director of rugby George Skivington said the injury did not “look exactly positive”.
However, a new update from the club ruled him out “until the latter part of the 2025/26 season”, raising doubts over his involvement in the Six Nations.
Steve Tandy’s side start their campaign against England on February 7.
Llewllyn featured in three of Wales’ four autumn internationals – starting against Argentina, Japan and New Zealand.
However, he wasn’t involved in the 73-0 defeat to South Africa, having gone back to Gloucester by that point.
“Max Llewellyn and Will Joseph both left the field during Gloucester Rugby’s Round 1 victory over Castres Olympique,” read an injury update from the Gallagher Prem club.
“Following early assessment, a knee injury for Llewellyn has ruled him out of action until the latter part of the 2025/26 season.
“Joseph continues to be assessed, but like Llewellyn, is not expecting to return to action quickly.”
The news will come as a blow for Tandy, with Llewellyn having grown into the role over the course of the autumn – particularly when paired with Joe Hawkins against the All Blacks.
The likes of Joe Roberts, Johnny Williams, Nick Tompkins and Owen Watkin have all worn the jersey in the recent seasons, with no one yet to truly nail down the position following the retirement of George North after the 2024 Six Nations.
It’s another injury blow for Wales, with captain Jac Morgan also sidelined ahead of the Six Nations.
After the opening match away to England, Wales take on France, Scotland, Ireland and Italy.
Tandy will be hoping Wales can end the run of 11 straight defeats in the competition, with Wales having ended up with the wooden spoon in the last two tournaments.
