Region forced into emergency signing as Lions legend talks up Welshman’s Test ambitions

The Gwent side have been forced into a emergency signing after a string of injuries in the front-row

Dragons have signed George Roberts from Doncaster Knights due to an injury crisis at hooker.

The 27-year-old joined up with his new team-mates earlier this week ahead of Sunday’s Challenge Cup clash with Lyon at Rodney Parade. His signature comes with the Dragons currently without Elliot Dee, James Benjamin and Sam Scarfe due to injury.

New Wales hooker Brodie Coghlan and Oli Burrows are also doubts for this weekend’s match with a hand and rib injury respectively.

Both aren’t expected to be out for long, but Dee and Benjamin are unlikely to feature before the Six Nations.

That leaves Will Austin, the former Wales U20s hooker who is on loan from Sale Sharks, as their only fully-fit option in the position.

Wrexham-born Roberts joins after five years with the English Championship club, having originally come through RGC’s pathway in north Wales.

“We’re pleased that George has linked up with us and we’re all looking forward to working with him and him being part of our group,” said Dragons head coach Filo Tiatia.

“He’s a proud Welshman who’s made the journey down from Doncaster this week. He’s met the players and coaching staff and is eager to get started with us.

“It’s a chance for him to make a big impression in our environment. He is committed and grateful for the chance. We wish him every success.”

He added: “George arrived on Tuesday night from Doncaster and has trained really well, but there has been a lot of information for him to take in.

“He is committed to the opportunity and grateful for the chance. Elliot and James are a little while away so it was important we got some help and we are happy to have George here.”

During his time at Doncaster, Roberts made 103 appearances for the Knights, scoring 19 tries.

“He has been core to the team’s performances and has developed as an important leader within the group,” said Knights director of rugby Sir Ian McGeechan, as the Lions legend talked up his Wales ambitions.

“We are delighted he has been given the opportunity to play in Wales for Dragons in the URC, something he has always wanted to achieve, and he goes with the very best wishes of all at the club to continue his journey towards a Welsh jersey.”
